Don’t be fooled by the appearance of your young Tanyosho Pine. This tough, reliable tree is not like a mugo pine, staying small and compact. As it matures it develops into a beautiful multi-stem bushy tree, reaching 12 feet wide and 15 feet across. One day it could reach 20 feet. This beautiful tree from Japan is a special form of the Japanese red pine, forming an umbrella-like tree with a handsome rounded crown. Very tough, growing in cold conditions and in poor soil, this tree looks great in an Asian-inspired garden, but just as good in a regular garden, perhaps planted among large boulders, in a lawn, or behind smaller shrubs. It looks great in the corner of the yard, or against the walls of your house – just be sure to allow enough room for its spread when you plant. The reddish bark develops flat plates, and the needles, in pairs, are about 4 inches long, giving a great look to this easy tree, one that isn’t widely grown. Now is your chance to have something very special and beautiful, yet trouble-free and easy to grow.

  • Broad, rounded, multi-stemmed tree
  • Grows to about 12 feet tall, or more in time
  • Handsome red, flaking bark and long needles
  • Excellent specimen in all styles of garden
  • Very tough, cold-hardy and tolerant of poor soil

The Tanyosho Pine grows best in full sun, and will be happy in any well-drained soil, with a slight preference for acidic soils. Grows well in poor, sandy soils, and is drought tolerant once well-established. This is the most cold-tolerant of the Japanese pines, and is hardy even in zone 4. Best grown in cooler zones and not very tolerant of high humidity and extreme heat. Deer resistant and generally problem free. Best left to grow naturally, without trimming.
