Sometimes a seedling tree grows that has lost the urge to grow upwards – for example, the Weeping Himalayan Cedar. This striking tree can be many things, but left alone it will grow into a spreading mound of pendulous branches, making a striking specimen among rocks, or cascading over a large wall. It could easily cover an area up to 12 feet across, remaining only 3 to 6 feet tall. This striking specimen is very eye-catching, and a great way to cover a large area of ground. If you want, though, you can also stake up a suitable branch to a considerable height, creating a unique feature – a broad tree with arching and weeping branches that looks fantastic out on a large lawn, or perhaps on a bank or slope. The needles grow in clusters along the stems, and they are a warm, bright green color, with new needles having a more silvery-blue look. Older trees may develop large upright cones. This is a special, unique tree for a special spot in your garden – allow enough room for its development.

  • A unique tree with spreading, pendulous branches and no central stem
  • Foliage is predominantly warm green with some silvery tones
  • Gorgeous large ground cover for a slope or rocky area
  • Can also be staked into a tree with widespread, weeping branches
  • Easy to grow and normally free of problems

Full sun is best for the Weeping Himalayan Cedar, although a few hours of shade each day will do no harm. Well-drained soil is essential, and preferably the soil should be neutral to acidic – high pH soils are not so suitable. Deer normally ignore it and it usually has no significant pest or disease problems. Be sure to use a strong, durable stake if you create a tree from this plant – it will grow large and have considerable weight, which could snap in a storm if not securely staked. If growing as a prostrate plant, remove any straight, upright stems that might develop. If grown as an upright tree, keep a single central stem to form a strong supporting trunk.
