There is a very good reason for seedling trees being cheaper than grafted, named varieties. Seedlings are variable, and you never know what you are actually going to get. With a named variety like the Kashmir Himalayan Cedar you can be confident that the tree you grow will be top-quality, and more than worth the price. You can be sure it will have elegant, pendulous branches that first arch out from the central trunk. It will have unusually long needles, giving it a fuller, softer look – and those needles will be a striking blue-green color, and not plain green, which most seedlings will be.

This beautiful tree is fast-growing when young, adding 15 to 18 inches of growth each year, and it won’t be long before it is 25 feet tall and 15 feet wide. After that growth slows, but ultimately this will be a beautiful large tree, probably 40 feet tall and 20 feet or more wide. so allow plenty of space when planting. Grow it as a beautiful specimen out on a large lawn, where it will achieve its best look, or at the back of large shrub beds. Did we mention the greater winter hardiness? Yes, this variety is also reliable in zone 6, and that is something else you can’t predict with seedlings.

  • Fast-growing, forming a large tree with pendulous branches
  • Striking blue-green foliage and a softer look from longer needles
  • A classic lawn specimen tree, where it will look terrific
  • Good cold tolerance, and reliably hardy in zone 6
  • Grows best in regions with drier summers

A spot in full sun is going to be best for your Kashmir Himalayan Cedar, and will develop the best blue foliage coloring. Well-drained soil is essential, and once established your tree will be very drought tolerant, even on rocky and sandy soils. It grows best in climates with dry summers that can also be hot, but it doesn’t enjoy high humidity along with heat. Deer don’t eat it and this tree is normally free of any pest or disease problems. Keep an eye on the growing tip – the part that creates the central trunk. If you see two shoots competing, remove one, as a tree with a divided trunk is more likely to split in a storm. Don’t trim as this destroys the natural grace and beauty of the tree. If you must shorten a side branch, cut just in front of a smaller branch on the top of the stem, as this will hide the cut and keep the natural form.
