Like a cascade of green water, the Emerald Falls Deodar Cedar will spill across your garden, or stand like a striking sentinel, depending on how you grow it. This beautiful evergreen will make a striking specimen in your garden, its pendulous branches contrasting with the rounded and upright shapes of your other plants. Growing a generous foot a year, it will soon become a good-sized plant, its stems carrying clusters of blue-green needles that give it a distinctive look. Left to grow naturally it will spread into a low mound, covering an area 10 feet across, or more. If you stake it you will have a tree 10 feet tall or more, with beautiful cascading branches reaching to the ground. It’s a beautiful choice for a lawn specimen, and great in a smaller garden. Grow it on a slope or among rocks, at the top of a wall, or for years it will be happy in a pot, decorating a city courtyard or Asian-themed garden space.
Plant your Emerald Falls Deodar Cedar in full sun, for the best growth and needle color. The soil should be well-drained, and at least while the tree is young, moist and rich. Older trees are drought resistant and grow in poor, rocky and sandy soils. Grows best in areas with cooler summers, or where summers are hot and dry. Not so successful in the southeast, with hot and humid summers. Deer-proof and normally free of pests or diseases. Decide early if you want to leave it to sprawl, or to grow upright. For a central stem with cascading branches, use a strong, preferably metal pole, as tall as you want the tree, and tie up a suitable branch to be the leading stem. Continue to tie it up until you reach the desired height, being careful to use loose ties that won’t strangle the stem as it thickens.
