For a perfectly proportioned blue spruce, the Yukon Blue White Spruce takes some beating. Dense, bushy and conical, it grows at a moderate rate, adding as much as 10 inches a year, so it will be 8 feet tall and 4 feet wide within 10 years, maturing around 12 feet tall. The short needles are brilliant silver-blue, and cover the stems densely. The typical brown buds of the white spruce add winter interest, and one day it may produce the long, hanging cones of this native tree. New spring growth is electric blue maturing to silver blue, and the whole tree retains the blue color throughout the year. The perfect choice if you want a blue spruce, but have a small garden, it is also perfect as an accent among the foundation planting around your home, or for a feature in a bed of dwarf conifers. Great out on a small lawn, or in mixed shrub beds, this is also a great tree for a pot, where it could be an outdoor or indoor Christmas tree for many years.

  • Brilliant silver-blue needles all year round
  • Dense, upright growth to 12 feet when mature
  • The perfect ‘blue spruce’ for a smaller garden
  • Very hardy and cold resistant to zone 3
  • Grows well in a pot for many years

Plant your Yukon Blue White Spruce in full sun for great color, and it also takes an hour or two of shade each day. Grow it in moist, well-drained soil that is neutral to acidic – it isn’t suitable for very alkaline soils. Water regularly, as it only has limited drought tolerance. Ridiculously hardy, growing happily in zone 3, this is a tree for cold to warm zones, thriving in areas with good rainfall and cooler summers. Will grow in a pot outdoors all year round from zone 5. Can be trimmed once a year, when the new growth has matured a little, cutting new shoots in half. Branches without needles on them will not regrow. Keep a single leading stem at the top by cutting back any competing branches by 50% or more. Not eaten by deer and normally free of pests or diseases.
