The Yellow Bird Magnolia is a remarkable deciduous magnolia tree, covered in late spring with an abundance of butter-yellow blooms. These are 3 inches across and open into a bowl, nestling among the newly-opening leaves. This later blooming extends the flowering season of these trees and protects them from late frost. With a pyramidal to rounded crown it stands up to 40 feet tall and 25 feet wide, making a wonderful specimen for a large lawn or to edge a wooded area. The large, slightly glossy leaves turn rusty yellow in fall.

  • Spectacular tree with well-sized, pure butter-yellow blooms
  • Blooms just as the leaves are developing
  • Upright pyramidal form is excellent for a lawn specimen
  • Attractive mid-green foliage turns golden yellow in fall
  • Vigorous and grows well in hotter zones

In full sun in cooler areas, or in partial shade in warmer ones, the Yellow Bird Magnolia is a vigorous tree that is easy to grow. Plant it in most well-drained soils, with a preference for slightly acidic ones that are rich and regularly moist. Established trees have some drought tolerance, but deep soakings in summer are ideal. Normally untroubled by pests or diseases. Limit pruning to remove any lower branches if needed for a taller trunk, and do this while the tree is young, to avoid scarring it. It is best not to do any other pruning, letting your tree develop naturally.
