Everyone loves the magic of sunflowers – they just radiate happiness. More correctly called ‘Helianthus’, they are usually tall, need staking, and produce just a few blooms – until now. Thanks to special breeding, we introduce the Sunbelievable® Brown Eyed Girl Helianthus, a compact hybrid sunflower that produces a multitude of blooms from May until hard frost arrives. Because it is ‘day-length neutral’ it starts early and finishes late. Plus, it produces no seeds, so the flowers just keep coming and coming, spreading happiness around your garden. Forming a bush about 3 feet tall and wide if you plant it in the garden, or about 2 feet in a container, it produces many flowers, not just a few. These are almost 5 inches across, with golden yellow petals surrounding a jet-black center. The petals have a small chocolate-brown base, creating a brown circle around the black center. Grow this beauty in pots and planters, or out among your perennials in the garden. It’s super-easy to grow, and lots of fun for the whole family
Grow the Sunbelievable® Brown Eyed Girl Helianthus out in full sun for good results. It will grow in any well-drained soil, and is a good choice for heavier, clay soils and alkaline soils too. Water regularly, before the leaves start to wilt, and feed with a general fertilizer for flowering plants. Dead-heading isn’t really needed, as the flowers produce no seeds and tend to disappear beneath the new ones. It is winter-hardy to zone 9, but is best treated as an annual plant.
