Sargent's Dwarf Lebanon Cedar

Sargent’s Dwarf Lebanon Cedar is a striking mound of sprawling branches, covered in beautiful blue-green needles. This tree is only ‘dwarf’ in relation to the normal tree, as it will grow into a large mound, standing up to 5 feet tall and spreading as much as 10 feet across in time. It has no natural leading stem, and could be made taller by staking up a suitable branch to form a leader. It is perfectly happy, though, sprawling across the ground, and looks great among rocks, on a slope, or at the top of a wall. The stems are studded with clusters of blue-green needles that are silver-blue in spring, giving a great look. This is the most cold-tolerant of the true cedars, and will grow in warmer parts of zone 5, in a sheltered spot.

Plant Sargent’s Dwarf Lebanon Cedar in full sun and in any well-drained soil. It tolerates alkaline soil and grows well in rocky and sandy soil, but also grows in clay if it isn’t wet. Add some organic material to poor soils when planting to help it establish well. Water new plants regularly, but once established it is very drought tolerant. Grows best in areas with cool summers or hot, dry summers, and not so well if summers are hot and humid. It isn’t eaten by deer and almost never has any pest or disease problems. For a taller plant, stake up a suitable branch to the height you want – side branches will soon develop. If you need to prune to control the spread, always cut just after a shoot on the top of the stem, so that it hides the cut end and allows
natural-looking growth to continue. In zone 5 a winter blanket is recommended, or maintain a good snow cover.
