Many gardeners in cooler zones might be familiar with the classic dwarf white pine, a rounded, small, shrubby evergreen of considerable appeal. That plant has the same long, soft needles of the parent tree, but imagine if those needles were twisted and curled and you have the Mini Twists Eastern White Pine. A new twist on an old favorite, this charming plant is a rounded to pyramidal dwarf evergreen growing about 5 feet tall in 10 years, with a spread of about 4 feet. So while dwarf, it isn’t miniature, so allow enough room for this beauty to grow. The lovely blue-green needles twist and curl to cover the many short stems, making a wonderful small evergreen that is perfect for a rock garden or gravel garden, and for more formal settings, such as flanking a door or gate. Grow it among other shrubs and flowers, adding interest and beauty in a plant that is easy to grow and trouble-free. From zone 5 you can grow it in planters and pots that could safely be left outdoors all winter.
Although the Mini Twists Eastern White Pine prefers moist, well-drained, and richer soils, it is happy in most conditions, and will be fine even in drier conditions, once it becomes established. In poor soil add some compost to the soil when planting, to give it a good start. Very cold tolerant, it grows in zone 3, yet is happy all the way into zone 8. We recommend annual candling for this variety – that is, remove about half the length of the new shoots in spring, before the needles grow out. Generally trouble-free and very easy to grow.
