For a pop of vibrant colors, you can’t beat the Mary Ann Lantana. This more cold-tolerant lantana is also a compact form, and only grows around 3 feet tall and wide, although older plants in sub-tropical areas will become larger. Somewhere between a shrub and a vine, this is also a great choice for pots and growing as an annual in cooler zones, and is evergreen outdoors in warm ones. It produces a continuous profusion of flower heads through spring and summer, and in fall and much of the winter in hotter areas. The sparkling flowers can be pink, yellow or orange, with all three colors in every flower head, making a great show. A very easy plant to grow, it loves heat and is drought-tolerant too, thriving in hot, dry places. Small oval leaves give it an attractive look, and it can be trimmed as needed to fit into small spaces. Ideal for beds, slopes, on fences, and in pots. Can be overwintered indoors in colder zones. A garden classic that is always popular.

  • Abundant flowers in pink, orange and yellow
  • Compact variety normally under 3 feet tall and wide
  • Flowers almost continuously in hot zones, or all through summer in colder ones
  • Tolerates sun, heat and dryness with ease
  • Trouble free and great in planters and pots

Grow the Mary Ann Lantana in full sun, although in hot zones it will tolerate some shade too. Plant it in any well-drained soil, it isn’t fussy, and will grow anywhere except in wet ground. Trim it as needed, it quickly resprouts and gets on with blooming. In colder zones bring pots indoors for winter, keeping plants as dry as possible, in a bright, cool place. Not eaten by deer or bothered by pests, and very easy to grow successfully.
