The Firefly® Diervilla is a great little shrub to bring fire and light to your garden. The new leaves in spring are amber yellow, turning bright yellow throughout spring and summer, but keeping the amber tips. In fall, as temperatures fall, they turn olive green, making a nice background for fall colors of other plants. From mid-June on it has brilliant lemon-yellow blooms in abundance, lasting to the beginning of August, and these attract many pollinator insects. Dense and rounded, growing to 3 or 4 feet tall if not trimmed, it’s amazingly adaptable to climate, various light levels, different soils and moisture conditions, and grows just about anywhere you plant it. Perfect as an accent plant in a bed, singly or in groups of 3 or 5 for larger plantings, or as an edging or hedge, this tough little guy, a plant native to North America, is a great addition to any garden. It’s the perfect way to add a bright accent anywhere you need it, from beds and hedges to slopes, rock gardens and natural settings too.

  • Bright foliage is golden yellow with amber accents
  • Citrus-yellow blooms for six weeks, starting in mid-June
  • Very easy and undemanding, growing almost anywhere
  • Dense, rounded shape needs no trimming to always look great
  • A great resource for pollinators and butterflies

Plant the Firefly® Diervilla in full sun for the best foliage colors, but it will also tolerate partial shade and even light full shade, but with greener foliage. It grows in any kind of soil, from acidic to alkaline, and from sand to clay, but does best in slightly moist but well-drained soils. It will even grow in areas that are wet from time to time, and is resistant to salt spray, deer, pests and diseases and pretty much anything that might bother other shrubs. It can be trimmed at any time, but best is to prune in early spring, if you want to control its size, or to remove any winter-damaged branches in cold zones. It isn’t necessary, though, as it has a naturally-dense habit and always looks neat and attractive.
