If you want the look of a big pine tree, but don’t have the room for one, the Emerald Arrow Bosnian Pine is a bullseye on the problem. This elegant tree forms a slender pyramid of upright branches, densely clothed in pairs of dark green 3-inch needles. Growing up to a foot a year when young, it won’t be long before it reaches its typical mature height of around 15 feet, with a width at the base of around 8 feet. It will continue to grow of course, but more slowly, so it won’t overwhelm your garden as large pines often do. Perfect for a neat lawn specimen, on either side of your front door, by a gate or in a corner of your yard. Heck, this graceful and beautiful tree will look great just about anywhere, in any garden. The young stems are smooth and white, giving this tree its alternative name of snakeskin pine. Older trees develop handsome, large purple cones. A unique and special tree that brings the ‘big pine’ look to smaller gardens.
Plant the Emerald Arrow Bosnian Pine in full sun, in a well-drained soil, including sandy soils and shallow, rocky soils too. Grows best in areas with cooler summer, and not happy in regions with hot, humid summer conditions. Deer resistant and normally free of pests or diseases, this tree is easy to grow in cooler zones. Trimming isn’t necessary or recommended to keep the elegant pyramidal form.
