Corbet Blue Spruce

There are blue spruce, and then there are blue spruce. Not everyone has the space or desire for a massive blue tree in their garden, but every plant lover can find room for the Corbet Blue Spruce. A perfect miniature, it begins life as a rounded, almost globe-shaped plant, but soon stretches out to become a fat cone, rising as much as 8 feet tall, and spreading 5 or 6 feet wide. The growth is incredibly dense, and the needles have the rich, silver-blue color we expect from the best forms of the Colorado spruce, which this certainly is. A great addition to your garden, plant it on a slope, among boulders and gravel, as an accent plant in the shrubs around your home, or even in a pot, where it would look great on your terrace. An ideal choice for colder zones, it is hardy even in zone 3 (zone 5 in a pot) and takes winter like it was born for it. Established plants have good tolerance to summer dryness, and best of all, no trimming is needed to keep that amazing dense, tight look.

A bright, full-sun spot will keep your Corbet Blue Spruce super-dense and bright blue. Plant it in any well-drained soil, from clay to sand or gravel, and in city gardens as well. Avoid wet places, but while young don’t let it become too dry – drought tolerance takes a few years to develop. Very cold tolerant, and ideal for areas with cold winters, but will struggle in regions with humid summers. We recommend not trimming, but do keep a watch that only one stem is making the central leader – split leaders can lead to storm damage. If you see two leading stems developing, simply cut back the less-central one by at least half.
