The Cinnamon Fern is a large native fern that brings grandeur and impact to any shady part of your garden. Typically growing about 3 feet tall, it can reach 5 feet in ideal conditions, forming a bold clump of upright, broad, green fronds. These rise from the ground in spring like uncurling hands. These are followed by special fronds that are narrow, twisted and brown, like cinnamon sticks. These are the ‘seed’ producing fronds, and their striking appearance lasts into winter too. Fabulous in damp, shady areas, along streams and by ponds, or among shade-loving shrubs and small trees. A dramatic accent plant of great beauty and impact.

  • Upright green fronds can reach 5 feet tall
  • Slender brown fertile fronds add interest and color
  • Spectacular by water or in shady parts of the garden
  • Grows well in damp and even wet soil
  • Native plant that looks great in any garden

Plant the Cinnamon Fern in areas with shade, shade after some early morning sun, in light dappled shade beneath trees or in tree shadow. Grow in moist, rich soils that can be well-drained or wet. Water generously in spring and summer, and cut back the green fronds in fall after they yellow and collapse. Brown fronds can be left for winter interest. Untouched by deer and almost entirely free of pests or diseases.
