For a wonderful dwarf blue spruce, you can’t beat our Blue Mist Spruce. At its bluest during the winter, the intensity of the silver-blue needles will amazing you. Too often you see over-sized spruce planted in small gardens – that won’t happen here, because this tree grows no more than 6 inches a year, maturing 5 to 6 feet tall. It forms a broad pyramid of dense branches, needing no trimming to look neat, and has the interesting habit of spreading out at the base, with the lowest branches creeping across the ground like a skirt. Allow for this when planting, it would be ideal behind a low wall, for example. If you wanted you could also encourage this style, by cutting back the central leading shoots regularly, turning it into a semi-creeping, prostrate plant. It’s an ideal choice for planting in a larger rock garden, or on a slope, as well as looking great in a large tub. Very winter-hardy, this selection of the classic blue Colorado spruce is sure to attract attention, while needing very little attention.
Plant the Blue Mist Spruce in a bright, sunny spot for the best color development of the foliage. It is very cold-hardy, at least through zone 3, and possible colder. It grows well in all kinds of soils, from rocky sands to clays, just so long as the ground isn’t always wet. It isn’t bothered by deer and usually stays free of pests or diseases. It doesn’t need trimming to stay dwarf, but as mentioned you can encourage a more prostrate form by trimming out branches growing strongly vertical. Prune as needed in late spring, after the new growth has matured.
