You’ll be at least close to heaven when you grow the super-easy, low-care/high-beauty Blue Heaven® Little Bluestem Grass. The leaves of this drought and heat tolerant ornamental emerge in spring a bright, light blue and become deeper blue-gray as summer arrives. Rising 2 or 3 feet in a vertical column, the slender leaves show tones of purple by late summer, and then turn a rich burgundy red as fall arrives, accented with pinks and purples. Through October and September, or earlier in warmer zones, flower stems push up to 4 feet tall, in upright wands, carrying red-brown flowers. These mature to sparkling silver-white, hairy seed heads. If left into winter the whole plant fades to reds and coppers. This is a very easy grass to grow, well-adapted to hot, humid summers and dry conditions too. Grow it among perennials or shrubs, on slopes and among rocks and gravel. It looks great in clumps of several plants, and could even make an attractive border along a path or at the foot of a wall. Very adaptable to all gardening styles.

  • Light blue new leaves mature to rich blue-gray
  • In fall foliage becomes burgundy red with purple and pink tones
  • Flowers in summer with slender wands of red-brown flowers and silvery seeds
  • Very tolerant of hot and humid conditions, and drought too
  • Grows well in both hot and cold zones

Grow the Blue Heaven® Little Bluestem Grass in full sun for the best color, and in just about any well-drained soil. Once established it has good drought tolerance, yet it also handles occasional flooding. It grows well in zone 3, and further south in areas with hot, humid summers and dry conditions. It is clump forming and non-invasive, so it can be safely planted in a small garden. Excellent choice for prairie gardens as well. Low on the list of deer choices, and generally left alone by them. Otherwise free of any pests or diseases, making it super-easy to grow. Cut the clump down to a couple of inches tall, anytime between fall and spring, but before new leaves start to appear.
