Bambino® Austrian Black Pine

To all lovers of true miniatures, this one’s for you. The Bambino® Austrian Pine really lives up to its name, forming a compact mound of very dark-green needles no more than a foot tall. It will, in time, spread sideways as much as 2 feet. With dense branches it looks like the perfect mugo pine, but with the added advantages of the toughness of Austrian pine, which resists urban pollution and grows happily across almost all the country. With very short, but dense, needles covering the branches, and striking white new growth, it’s a real treasure, and sure to win a place in your heart. Ideal for planting in a small rock garden, it could also be grown for years in a pot, on a table or a window ledge, where its charm will conjure up visions of alpine slopes and high mountains, right in your own garden, even in a big city.

Grow your Bambino® Austrian Pine in full sun, which will keep it tight and looking good. It will grow in any well-drained soil, enjoying poor, sandy and rock soils. Cold hardy in zone 4 and resistant to urban pollution too. When growing in a pot it could be left outdoors all winter from zone 6. It isn’t eaten by deer, and is resistant to verticillium wilt, which kills pines in some areas. Use a cactus compost if growing in a pot, and don’t over-water. Cannot be grown indoors year-round. No need to trim or ‘candle’ the new shoots, making it easier than a mugo pine to keep super-compact.
