When it comes to capturing that elusive ‘true blue’ for your garden, it’s almost impossible to beat the Royal Cape® Plumbago. A stunning ocean of sky blue, this plant, half shrub and half vine, gives an abundance of large blue flowers that, from late spring to fall, are so profuse as to hide the foliage. Fast-growing, if left alone it will make a shrub about 8 feet across and 5 feet tall, or even larger. It can easily be pruned in spring, though, and maintained at a smaller size. Grow it on a sunny bank, where it will be spectacular, giving erosion control, or let it spill over a low fence or wall. Tie it to a taller wall as a wall-shrub, taking up little room but delivering a massive floral display. This great variety is a much richer blue than the traditional plumbago’s pale blue, and the flowers are larger too. A great plant outdoors for gardeners in zones 9 and 10, or grow it in a conservatory or sun-room, trained up the wall, in cooler zones. In colder zones you can also grow it in a large pot and bring it indoors for the winter months.

  • Spectacular trailing shrub with true-blue flowers
  • Blooms for months through summer and fall
  • Great for banks, slopes and low fences or walls
  • Grow it indoors on the wall of a conservatory or sunroom
  • Great plant for tubs and planter boxes

Choose a sunny spot for the Royal Cape® Plumbago if you want maximum flowering. Grow it in any well-drained soil, and once established it has excellent tolerance of dry conditions. It isn’t bothered by deer, pests or diseases, and is very easy to grow and fast-growing. Prune hard in winter, and trim the early growth when it is a foot long, to encourage a more compact plant. Don’t trim the stems again, or flowering will be reduced. When grown in a planter, cut back hard just before the first hard frost, and bring indoors. The ideal spot will be cold and well-lit, but frost-free. In a warmer room you will need to water it sparingly during winter, and trim back again when you take it back outdoors in spring.
