As a garden matures, shade increases, especially at ground level, as shrubs grow taller. This means we need to plant colorful shade-loving spreaders to bring life back at ground level, and make your garden a place of layered beauty. Heuchera are among the very best perennials for this purpose, and if you want a low, broad plant with great foliage, the Balboa Sunset® Heuchera is a terrific choice. Growing hardly more than 6 inches tall, it covers over a square foot of ground with dense, weed-resistant foliage. The handsome leaves, rounded, with wavy edges, are 2 ½ inches across, and hold themselves upright to show-off both the top and bottom of the leaves. New growth in spring and early summer is a fabulous wine-red, turning to a rich, deep green for the summer, looking oh, so cool. Flowering is rare, keeping the emphasis on the great foliage. Tolerant of all light conditions and climates, it is semi-evergreen in warmer areas, and grows easily beneath other plants, or, for that matter, out in the open. Grow it under shrubs, in shady or sunny rock gardens, edging paths, or as a container plant beneath potted shrubs and perennials. An easy, versatile way to cover bare ground, and super-easy to grow. Sit back andenjoy the sunset.
The Balboa Sunset® Heuchera tolerates all climates, from northern cold to southern heat and humidity. You can plant it in any location, from full sun (in cooler zones) to full shade anywhere. Once established it will even grow in dark, dry shade. It will grow in any well-drained soil, of any type – add some compost when planting to give it a good start in life. Water regularly while young, but mature plants are remarkably tolerant of dry soil and heat. Deer normally ignore it and it almost never has any pest or disease problems. In warmer areas it is semi-evergreen, but at some point in the year, before new growth comes, it is a good idea to cut back the foliage, being careful not to cut the ends of the stems. Cover older plants in a mix of half-compost and half soil, to bury the stems – this will encourage new, vigorous growth.
