The unique and beautiful Baby Pete™ Agapanthus is an evergreen perennial with strap-like green leaves forming a mound about 15 inches tall. In late spring stems rise up to 2 feet, carrying round heads of star-shaped blooms in a wonderful shade of blue. Blue plants really add something special to your garden, and this variety is not only compact but also begins to bloom 2 weeks before other agapanthus varieties do. Plus, it sets no seeds, so it often produces more spikes of flowers, keeping it in bloom week after week. It is an easy plant to grow in warm to hot parts of the country, even thriving in the southwest, and is hardy outdoors from zone 8. It’s smaller size makes it a terrific choice for growing in pots, in any zone. These need to be protected from frost if you are in cooler zones. Use it to edge a pathway, add flowers and interest to any garden bed, or plant it as groundcover beneath trees with light shade. The foliage stays green through winter, particularly in hot zones. The flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds.

  • Compact variety for gardens and pots
  • Globes of blue flowers from late spring through summer
  • Blooms two weeks before any other variety of agapanthus
  • Very tolerant of heat and drought
  • Great in containers in colder zones

Plant Baby Pete™ Agapanthus in full sun, although in very hot, dry areas it may do better with some afternoon shade. Plant in any well-drained soil, of any type, including poor, dry soils and among rocks. Once established it is very tolerant of heat and drought, and indeed it tends to flower best in drier, poor conditions and when crowded in the pot, so don’t repot. With too much shade and in rich, moist soils it will stay green but may not flower well. Deer don’t eat it and it only very rarely has any pest or disease problems, but avoid spots that are wet as this can cause root rots. Up to and including zone 8, plants in pots should be kept dry during winter, only water if the foliage begins to shrivel, and in a frost-free place – light in winter is helpful but not essential.
