If you have a sunny garden, then the Violet Profusion Salvia is just the perennial you need. Easy to grow, striking in bloom, and a great re-bloomer, it gives you tones of rich color from late spring into the fall. Salvia really is the ‘go-to’ when you want an easy, sun-loving, care-free plant for your beds, and this one ticks all the boxes. Typically growing a little over 18 inches tall, with a dense, neat, bushy habit that doesn’t flop all over the place, the 6-inch spikes of flowers are densely-packed, and bloom for weeks in the most gorgeous purple coloring. Give it a trim, and before you know it, it’s back in bloom again – just repeat as needed. Plant it in the front of shrub beds, as part of a traditional perennial border, or in more contemporary plantings with grasses, black-eyed Susans, cone flowers, tall sedums, and other modern, easy-care perennials. It can also be planted in semi-wild grassy places, as well as in planter boxes and pots.
The best place for the Violet Profusion Salvia is in full sun, but it will take a couple of hours of shade each day too, especially in hotter zones. It grows in any well-drained soil – avoid wet places – and it does very well in alkaline or limestone soils. When in a planter box, let the soil dry somewhat – don’t be too eager to water if it looks happy. Remove the central flower spike once it declines – those around it will push up – and once they have bloomed trim back to the level of the foliage, or to the base if you see lots of vigorous shoots pushing up from the bottom of the plant. Regular trimming will keep blooms coming and coming. During the hottest part of summer flowering may take a short rest, but cooler weather brings it right back again. Use a general-purpose liquid fertilizer regularly when growing in pots. Deer and rabbits don’t eat it, and you never see any pests on this plant. Cut back to the ground in late fall – new stems will push up quickly next spring.
