Golden foliage in taller evergreens is uncommon, which makes Wells Golden Deodar Cedar rare, but more importantly, super beautiful. The needles are a wonderful golden yellow all year round, and the graceful, upright form of this elegant tree shows the foliage off to perfection. Clusters of yellow needles decorate the arching branches, which in time become horizontal and then pendulous, with lovely weeping tips. Forming a striking specimen, it will be at least 12 feet tall within 10 years, and mature around 20 feet tall, perhaps even taller in time. With a strong central trunk, the branches spread out, making a wonderful specimen out on a lawn, against the sky or against a background of green leaves. Trouble-free and drought tolerant, it is very suitable if you have dry summers, and also grows well in mountain areas.
It’s important to plant your Wells Golden Deodar Cedar out in full sun, or the needles will become greenish. The strongest coloring is seen in spring and summer. Grow it in any well-drained soil, including rocky and sandy soils, and alkaline soils too. Young trees benefit from some soil improvements when planting, and regular watering, but once established it is very drought tolerant, enjoying dry weather. Not so suitable for areas with hot, humid summers. It isn’t eaten by deer and almost never has any pest or disease problems. We recommend keeping a single, central trunk, as multiple trunks are prone to splitting during storms. Do this by removing any extra stems that are competing with the main, leading one. Other pruning isn’t necessary, but if you plan to remove any branches, do it while young, to avoid scarring the trunk.
