Major Weeping Serbian Spruce

The Major Weeping Serbian Spruce is a special selection of the weeping Serbian spruce, a tree that has beautiful weeping branches, very different from the horizontal branches of the wild tree. In this selection the tree has no ‘instinct’ to grow vertically at all, and naturally forms a sprawling mound of long, hanging branches. It is superb for covering slopes and in rock gardens, and looks stunning planted at the top of a wall, where it will cascade down like a green waterfall. The branches are densely covered in short needles that are bright green in spring, maturing to a darker green with bluish overtones. It can also be trained into an upright weeping tree, by tying a strong branch onto a robust wooden stick or metal pole. It can then be grown into as tall a tree as you want, and will develop a unique and beautiful twisting form with cascading side branches. Plant your Major Weeping Serbian Spruce in full sun for good growth. It will grow in most garden soils with ease, as long as the spot is well-drained. Water regularly while it becomes well-established, but after that it will handle ordinary summer dry periods without any problem. Deer and rabbits don’t eat it, and it normally has no pest or disease problems. Don’t trim, as this will destroy its unique form. If staking to grow upright, use ties that will rot, or examine them regularly to be sure they aren’t cutting into the bark, strangling the tree.
