Often starting life as a potted Christmas tree, you can see lots of Nordmann fir in gardens, although the owners probably haven’t figured out yet that this tree can grow to 100 feet tall, making it only suitable for large gardens. Don’t fall into that trap, and plant instead the beautiful Weeping Nordmann Fir. Not only will it probably never much exceed 25 feet tall, its beautiful pendulous branches make it one of the very best weeping evergreens to plant on a lawn. It maintains a strong central stem, growing upright, but the side branches soon become pendulous, cascading down in graceful falls of dark green needles. It won’t take for ever, either, with a growth rate of over 6 inches a year, until you have a handsome specimen that is only going to be become more beautiful and unique as time passes. Each tree grows differently, usually with irregular branching, forming over time an amazing specimen, each one unique. This is an adaptable and easy evergreen to grow across many climates, and will become a vibrant member of your family very soon.

  • Sweeping, pendulous branches from an upright central trunk
  • Long, flat needles are deep green, with silvery undersides
  • Matures around 25 feet tall, but may eventually pass that
  • Irregular branching makes each tree a unique specimen
  • Easy to grow in most of the country

The Weeping Nordmann Fir grows vigorously in most parts of the country, and is hardy from zone 5. It should be planted in full sun, and in most well-drained soils, including clay soils, with a slight preference for acidic conditions, but this is not essential. Water newly planted trees regularly, and established ones during extended periods of drought. Not eaten by deer or rabbits, it doesn’t have any particular pest or disease issues, and is easy to grow. Not so suitable for areas with very humid summers. When young you should use a strong stake to establish a single upright leading stem. In time the tree will learn to keep that stem more or less upright, and further staking won’t be needed. Avoid trimming – let your tree become its own unique self.
