“Heavenly shades of night are falling, it’s twilight time. . .”, and time to admire your plants of the Twilight Zone Little Bluestem Grass. This stunning variety features an early development of rich purple colors on the blue leaves, just like the tones of twilight. Starting blue-green, by midsummer the tall column of slender leaves take on soft tones of silvery-purple, starting at the leaf tips. Around the same time tall, red-purple flower stems rise up, carrying red-brown flowers that turn into silvery seeds. Unlike other varieties, the leaves continue up into the flower heads, making a fuller look. By fall the leaves start turning richer purples, and the flower stems do too, making a rich, deep color accent in your beds, where tans and beiges will be starting to predominate. This tough, reliable selection of a native grass is durable in tough conditions, taking dryness, intense sunlight, heat and humidity in its stride. Grow it with other grasses, perennials or shrubs, everywhere from formal settings to woodland margins and prairie plantings.

  • Foliage develops silver-purple shadings by mid-summer
  • Fall colors are rich purples, on durable stems
  • Pink-purple flower stems carry red-brown flowers and silver seeds
  • Sun tolerant, it’s a great choice for dry, hot and humid locations on poor soil
  • A great mood-changer for any garden planting

The Twilight Zone Little Bluestem Grass loves the hot sun, and is great for exposed, dry sites. It grows happily in any well-drained soil, including poor sands and gravels, but also on clay. Once established it has good drought tolerance, and is perfect for places where other plants have failed. Non-invasive and clump-forming, it isn’t normally eaten by deer and has no pests or diseases. Cut down the dead leaves anytime between late fall and early spring – just do it before the new leaves appear. That’s all the attention needed to get great results from this outstanding native grass.
