A wonderful plant with many uses, the Thunderbolt® Box Honeysuckle is a low-growing evergreen shrub with small leaves of a terrific golden yellow year-round. Tolerant of full sun, heat and humid conditions, it makes a bright groundcover, spreading over a wide area, on banks and slopes, or edging shrub beds. Many gardens have empty spaces or problem areas that can be instantly solved by planting this reliable and tough plant. It can also be clipped into low hedges, just like boxwood, which its leaves closely resemble. Older, untrimmed plants may produce small white flowers in spring. Convert that dull, weedy space into a golden carpet with this trouble-free groundcover. Use it at the top of walls, or even planted directly into them, and in large planters beneath taller shrubs and trees. A perfect golden carpet, hiding anything you want hidden, and a great way to finish your beds, especially along paths, driveways and around terraces.
Thunderbolt® Box Honeysuckle tolerates hot direct sun without scorching, but it also grows well in partial shade. Too little sun will make the leaves more greenish. Plant it in any well-drained soil, and once established it has good drought tolerance, but also appreciates some water from time to time. It is very resistant to deer and never seems to have any pest or disease problems. Evergreen in zone 6, it will lose leaves in zone 5, but come back well after a light clipping in spring. Can be trimmed almost any time of year, but not in late fall or winter in colder areas, as new growth may be damaged by cold.
