The President Canna Lily Bulbs

For a bold statement in your garden, The President Canna Lily is one of the most colorful of summer-flowering plants you can grow. Vibrant red flowers top a clump of showy tropical-looking leaves, and although more compact than many canna lilies, it still grows to 4 or even 5 feet tall in the space of a season. Producing multiple stems, each one is topped with a cluster of large, frilly flowers in a magnificent shade of fire-engine red, a magnet for hummingbirds, and a brilliant show of color in your garden. Super-easy to grow, it makes a great statement planted in a bed on your lawn, or behind other bright-colored perennials as a backdrop. It is also a terrific plant for boxes and pots, bringing the tropics to your terrace or pool area. If you live in cooler zones it is very easy to keep the root through the winter indoors, so you can have it again for years and years.

Plant The President Canna Lily in full sun, in a rich soil. It is happy in most soils, including sandy ones, and grows best with a regular supply of water. Free of any significant pests or diseases and very easy to grow. Use liquid fertilizer regularly for plants in pots for maximum growth. Remove spent flower heads to encourage more growth, or enjoy the unusual seed heads that are often produced. From zone 7 the root can be left in the ground after cutting down the stems in winter. In colder zones, once the first frost has damaged the leaves, lift the clump, let it dry completely, and then remove soil and foliage, storing the root in a cool place, in a paper bag with some dry peat moss. Replant the next spring, in a pot in early spring indoors, or directly outdoors in early May.
