A hybrid between a Heuchera (coral bells) and a Tiarella (foam flowers), the lovely Sweet Tea Foamy Bells is a wonderful foliage plant for partial shade with big, bold leaves that are over 5 inches long and deeply lobed. In spring they are light, bright orange with a deep rose-pink center, radiating along the veins. In summer they turn dusky orange to tan with red veins and in winter they are more red-brown, with deep maroon veins. The wonderful changing colors often show in leaves overlapping others with different tones, making a bold, ever-changing display. A vigorous and easily grown plant that resembles coral bells, but with more divided leaves. An excellent companion for those plants, it also flowers in June and July with tall stems of many tiny white flowers on slender orange stalks. Valuable for edging, mass-planting in shade gardens, planting by water, among rocks or with other shade-loving plants, for its unique brown and orange tones.
A little more sensitive to sun than coral bells, Sweet Tea Foamy Bells grows best in partial shade, with a little morning sun, or in light, dappled shade beneath evergreen trees or large shrubs. It grows in almost any well-drained soil, but enjoys slightly richer and more moist conditions. However it is significantly easier to grow than foam flowers, which need damp and shade. It is vigorous and fast-growing, almost never bothered by pests or diseases, or eaten by deer. Trim off dead flower stems as needed, and remove old, damaged foliage in spring – you’re all set for another year of beauty.
