Mandevilla vines, often known by their old name of Dipladenia, have become enormously popular, and no wonder. No other plant delivers such continuous blooming, from late spring right through fall and even into winter, than these beautiful plants do. The leaves are glossy deep-green, the flowers large and elegant, and the vibrant colors are spectacular. Most of the time, though, the flowers are red, pink or white – until now. With the Bluephoria™ Mandevilla we have a total color-break, because this plant has gorgeous mauve-blue flowers that will blow you away. The buds are vivid coral-pink, opening to a soft pink, which rapidly matures to mauve-blue, giving a dynamic, exciting look that is special and new for Mandevilla. The bushy vine can be allowed to mound and cascade, spreading 3 or 4 feet across and about 2 feet tall, or it can be trained up to twine naturally on a trellis, where it will be several feet tall by the end of the season. If you are in zone 9 or warmer you can grow it outside all year round, otherwise bring it into a cool, bright place for the winter months. A great plant for planters, pots, and window boxes, or for filling the front of beds, you will indeed be euphoric when you see this great new color breakthrough.
Grow the Bluephoria™ Mandevilla in full sun. It will tolerate a little shade, but too much and blooming will be reduced. Grow it in any well-drained soil, or regular potting soil when growing in containers. It isn’t eaten by deer or rabbits, and is very easy to grow. Flowers often attract butterflies and hummingbirds. No need to dead-head, as the old flowers fall naturally. If not being grown on a trellis, you can pinch out the tips of longer shoots to encourage a more bushy plant. In containers, regular feeding with liquid food for flowering plants will give you abundant, endless flowering. When frost threatens, dig it up and place it in a pot, bringing it inside to a cool, bright or sunny place, like a window-sill. Water sparingly during winter, and trim in spring, before replanting outside after frost has gone.
