Some colors are incredibly rare in the garden, and all the more desirable for that. The amazing cinnamon and peach blend of the Southern Comfort Coral Bells is certainly in that category. A substantial plant, standing over a foot tall and 2 feet wide, the enormous leaves can be 7 inches across, flat and lobed, with a unique dull, slightly felted surface that only heightens the color effect. That incredible bright but elegant coloring turns to rich shades of coppers and ambers as summer advances, and this plant just oozes class and quality. Grown along a path it is glorious, and so, so stylish. The effect is enhanced in summer by flower stems nearly 2 feet tall that rise up, carrying tiny white flowers that flutter in the breezes. Bred to take the heat and humidity of the South, it grows well everywhere, and is vigorous, dependable and simply outstanding.
Grow the Southern Comfort Coral Bells in partial shade or light full shade. It grows well in any well-drained soil, enjoying richer earth, but tolerating poor conditions too. Water regularly when young and use liquid fertilizer for evergreens to boost the leaf size to its maximum. Established plants are drought resistant, and more coral bells are killed by overwatering than by a lack of water. Deer donāt bother it and pests or diseases donāt either. Remove spent flower stems for neatness and any dead or damaged leaves in spring, just before the new growth begins. Mulch in spring when growing in poor, very dry soils.
