Bring your garden to life in spring with the stunning color of the Scarlet Flame Creeping Phlox. They are so lovely, and so little work, that a garden is not complete without them, preferably in several different colors. This one is covered in spring for up to 4 weeks with star-shaped flowers of a vibrant, radiant red-pink. Bold, flamboyant and lovely, it looks fabulous spilling out of a bed or rock garden, or perhaps in the levels of retaining walls. Grow it on a slope, with other small shrubs and spreading perennials. Flowering is profuse, completely hiding the needle-like foliage. When not in bloom the bright-green leaves are evergreen, and rival dwarf junipers for beauty. This variety is exceptionally vigorous, and the low mats it grows into soon reach 2 feet across. Plant it with ‘cool’ colors, like purples and blues – there are lots of them among our selection of creeping phlox – check it out and transform your spring garden.
Full sun is best for the Purple Beauty Creeping Phlox, as shade will make it open and weak, while sun gives you a dense, healthy mat of foliage. Plant in any well-drained soil, and that includes alkaline soils, sandy and rocky ground, and urban soils. Plants are untroubled by pests or diseases, and deer leave them alone. The only care is to trim lightly immediately after the flowers finish, using shears to make a dense, neat mat of leaves and branches. New stems quickly grow out, and the flowering will be even more profuse the following spring.
