Nobody could ever tear Romeo and Juliet apart, and we won’t either, which is why we have arranged this special coupling for all you lovers – and for cherry lovers too. We have paired plants together before, such as holly trees, but for this unique arrangement we are shipping you two separate trees, so both can thrive and forever see each other across your garden. These are not regular cherry trees, but new varieties bred to be small bushes, only 6 or 7 feet tall, and the first sweet cherries that will grow well in colder areas. By bringing them together you will maximize your crop, and have plenty of sweet, delicious cherries both to eat fresh and to turn into pies, preserves and jams. They have the perfect balance between sweetness and tang, tasting great and having enough acidity to make jams and pies that aren’t bland and over-sweet. Best grown as bushes, the bare branches are festooned with romantic white blossoms in April, and after the birds and bees have done their thing, you will have bumper crops of juicy, lip-staining, dark-red cherries ready in July and August. In fall the leaves turn great shades of yellow and oranges, bringing another year of garden romance to a close.
Your Romeo and Juliet Cherry Trees love being in full sun, and will reward you with lots of flowers and fruit. They grow well in any well-drained soil, and are perfectly happy in alkaline or limestone soils too. Incredibly hardy, they can be grown in zone 2, yet grow well all the way into zone 9, so these are cherries everyone can enjoy. Remember to water regularly the first year, and also while the cherries are developing, but these trees are reasonably drought tolerant and easy to grow. Fruit gets sweeter if you wait a while after they have colored – you might need to throw a net over them to keep the birds from getting there first. Deer could be a problem, but otherwise, these are easy trees to grow. No fancy pruning is needed, just let them grow as bushes, but if you are more serious about it, pruning into an open vase shape will maximize ripening, which could be valuable in colder zones.
