The Pimoko Serbian Spruce is one of the best-known and easy-to-grow dwarf evergreens, making a lovely soft-green bun of short stems, with an attractive, dense form. So we asked our growers to raise it up on a short trunk, to create a charming miniature tree, with a rounded crown. It stands about 2 feet tall when you first plant it, and grows another foot or so as the crown develops and expands. It is a perfect highlight in a bed of low shrubs, and an attractive accent beside a gate or at the foot of some steps. It would also be lovely in a tub, with annuals or perennials planted beneath it. The new foliage in spring is a beautiful spring green and always delightful, while the mature leaves are a softer, smoky green, with some silver touches from the underside of the needles, which curve upwards a little. An especially easy evergreen to grow, and one that is more tolerant of hotter areas than most other spruce or firs.
Your Pimoko Serbian Spruce Tree will be happiest in full sun, but it takes an hour or two of sun each day with no problem. Because the crown is raise above the ground, it isn’t quite as hardy as the normal form, but grows well in zone 5. In a pot it is hardy to zone 6. Newly planted trees should be kept moist, but once it is well-established it will tolerate normal summer dry periods with no problem. Deer and rabbits leave it alone, and it doesn’t have any significant pest or disease problems to worry about. You don’t need to trim it – just let it grow into the natural tight form it has.
