You will be purring with pleasure when you see the Picture Purrfect Catmint growing happily in your garden. This hybrid variety flowers 2 weeks before most others, and has noticeably larger individual flowers in abundance on a broad bush that is up to 2 feet across but only a foot tall. The soft oval leaves are gray green, and the long flower spikes rise up above the foliage, packed with clusters of gorgeous blue blooms, each one a flaring trumpet featuring a broad lower lip. The color is richer and closer to pure blue than we see in other catmints, and it stays in bloom for 6 weeks from early June, and, if trimmed, will flower again in October. It is just as easy to grow as other catmints – and that means super-easy – thriving in drier soils and sun. It’s great for fronting beds of perennials or shrubs, and perfect for spilling over walls, in the pockets of rock gardens, or planted at the edge of hard surfaces (paths, driveways, terraces) and allowed to spread over them, softening the angular architecture. It is also perfect for pots and planters, mixed with taller, more upright-growing plants. The whole plant has a herbal, minty fragrance, and attracts cats, although it isn’t the true catmint.
For the perfect garden picture, plant your Picture Purrfect Catmint in full sun, in well-drained soil. It thrives in sands and gravel soils, but also in regular garden soils as well. Water new plants frequently for a while, but once established it has good drought tolerance. Deer and rabbits dislike the smell, and it usually has no pests or diseases. Remove flower spikes as they fade, individually or by trimming lightly with shears. New growth will flower again in the fall.
