Neon Burst Dogwood

For a beautiful foliage shrub, with high garden impact, it’s hard to beat the Neon Burst™ Dogwood. It has the same scarlet-red winter twigs we expect from this type of dogwood, but with the extra benefit of wonderful golden summer foliage and spectacular fall colors of reds, purples, and golds. Left to develop naturally it will grow 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, but with simple pruning every few years it can be kept around 3 feet tall with no problem at all. Tough, incredibly cold-hardy to zone 3, and as happy in wet soils as it is in ordinary ones, the chartreuse summer foliage is a joy to see, and a super-simple way to brighten any bed. Plant it anywhere in the garden – around your home, in your shrub beds, beside a pond or stream, or edging a woodland. It makes a great informal screen, and adds summer color to the winter color we are used to finding with these red-twig dogwoods.

Grow the Neon Burst™ Dogwood in full sun, or with just a few hours of shade each day. Growth will be poor in heavy shade. Plant in just about any type of soil, although dry, sandy soil is not so suitable without adding plenty of rich compost when planting. It thrives in ordinary garden soils, and also in wet soils, such as beside a stream. Deer won’t eat it, and it usually has no pests or problems, apart from occasional harmless leaf spotting. For the longest red twigs, and a more compact form, prune every second or third spring, before leaves appear, cutting down to a few inches from the ground.
