Millenium Allium certainly marks a new beginning for ornamental onions. This beautiful plant blooms in late summer, not spring, with fabulous balls of rose-purple flowers on foot-tall stems. The rounded leaves form a dense clump from spring into fall and the flowers turn into charming seed heads for the fall. Perfect for planting among other perennial flowers, such as sedums and ornamental grasses, using in a rock garden or planting to edge a bed. Also attractive in pots and planter boxes. Although not ‘culinary’, the onion-flavored leaves are edible. Attractive to butterflies.
Full sun is best for the Millenium Allium, but in warmer zones it will take some partial shade happily. Grow it in any well-drained soil, including drier soils and sandy places. Avoid wet areas. Generally free of pests and diseases and ignored by deer. Cut back to an inch or two tall in fall – that’s all the care it needs. The seed heads are attractive and can be dried for ornamental indoors through the winter.
