If you have only ever eaten canned lychee fruits, be ready for a great treat when you grow your own. A special treat, the Mauritius Lychee is a selected variety with a rough red skin that conceals white flesh with a wonderful, tangy but sweet tropical flavor. A large tree in nature, it can be grown outdoors in frost-free zones, and also as a houseplant, with leathery, oval, water-repellent leaves and clusters of yellow-white flowers at the ends of the branches. These become clusters of fruit, first green and then red, that are a wonderful tropical treat and delicious to eat fresh – just crack the dry outer skin and suck the translucent white flesh from the stone – wow! Fast-growing, this special variety fruits while young, unlike seedling trees that take years to flower, and will deliver top-quality fruit right in your own home.

  • Clusters of berries with rough red skin
  • Delicious white flesh is sweet and packed with unique tropical flavor
  • Leathery green leaves make an attractive houseplant
  • Will become a large tree when grown outdoors in a frost-free zone
  • A selected variety that fruits well while still young

Grow your Mauritius Lychee in full sun, or in a bright window indoors. Plant in a moist but well-drained soil, giving plenty of water during the summer, and less during winter. The pot should have a drainage hole, and don’t leave it standing in a saucer of water. If needed, prune after fruit has been harvested. Not especially susceptible to ordinary houseplant pests or diseases, it should be grown in humid conditions. Hand pollinate flowers when growing indoors, using a soft paint brush to move pollen from one flower to another.
