Maroon Swoon® Weigela

If you are familiar with weigela, you really might pass-out with joy when you set eyes on the Maroon Swoon® Weigela, dying to grow it in your garden. This break-through new introduction has everything – a compact habit; clear red flowers, without any purple overtones; plus, continuous and prolific flowering all the way into early fall – I mean, who could ask for more? The continuous blooming of this variety is a great improvement over older ones, that basically are over by the time summer starts.
Starting in June, every branch produces many buds, and the large flowers – over a inch long – have wide, flaring mouths that give them lots of impact. This first flush of blooms lasts several weeks, and a light trim (to remove seed capsules) is all it takes to trigger another big flush, and more too, right into fall. A compact form, 4 to 5 feet tall and wide, makes it a great choice for a flowering hedges and for beds, anywhere you want color and easy growth – it’s a tough, reliable plant and great for new gardeners.

Grow the Maroon Swoon® Weigela in full sun for the most blooms, but it will take a few hours of shade in a day too, with only a small reduction in flowering. Plant it in any well-drained soil, it really isn’t fussy, although regular watering gives you terrific results. It has good tolerance of normal dry periods, good cold-hardiness in zone 4, and generally deer, pest and disease resistant. Trim the whole bush lightly after the first flush of blooms, and in older plants remove some of the oldest branches in at the same time.
