La Luna Dahlia Bulbs

The 10-inch blooms – yes, that isn’t a typo – stand atop long, strong stems on a plant that can reach 5 feet tall in a single season. Glowing tones of light yellow, like a harvest moon, the blooms fade gradually to near-white as they mature. With broad, twisted, pointed petals, it has a star-like, slightly informal look you will love. Grow it at the back of your perennial beds, among shrubs as a summer highlight, or in a cutting garden to enjoy those amazing blooms inside in a (large) vase. Full sun will give the best results for your La Luna Dahlia. Plant it in soil you have enriched with plenty of good compost, and keep your plant well-watered all through the growing season. The soil should be well-drained, but not dry. Dahlias aren’t eaten by deer, and they rarely suffer from any serious pest or disease problems, making them easy to grow and very rewarding. For the largest blooms, remove the side-buds, keeping the top bud only. Dead-head as needed to keep flowers coming. If you are in zone 6 or warmer, cut back once killed by frost and mulch over the root – it will resprout in spring. In colder zones lift it completely, removing the soil and dead foliage and storing in a cool place in a paper bag for the winter. Start growing in a pot indoors, planting out after the danger of frost has gone, or plant directly in the garden when the soil temperature reaches 60 degrees, typically in early May.
