Kamenz Serbian Spruce

There are lots of spreading evergreens, it’s true, but few rival the Kamenz Serbian Spruce for charm and character. It grows steadily, adding up to 5 inches a year, into a broad, low carpet perhaps 5 feet across in time, but just a couple of feet tall. If you know the Serbian spruce you may know it has two-tone leaves, green on top and silver beneath, but these rarely show on regular trees. In this variety they are a prominent feature, because of the branch angles, creating a unique and fascinating bi-color look that adds to the specialness of this plant. Perfect for edging a bed where it meets a hard surface, or for planting at the top of a wall, it makes a great addition to a collection of smaller evergreens planted among rocks and gravel, on a slope or on level ground. It is also suitable, while young, for a pot or large trough. Trouble-free and easy to grow, you will love the charm and beauty of this great little evergreen.

Grow the Kamenz Serbian Spruce in full sun to keep the growth dense and bright. As long as it is well-drained, it tolerates just about any kind of soil, including low-nutrient sands and urban soils. Once established it will tolerate normal summer dryness easily, and isn’t eaten by deer or rabbits. Among the easiest dwarf evergreens to grow, it has no pest or disease problems of any consequence. It won’t need trimming to keep its natural low, spreading form, so relax and leave those shears in the shed. A sprinkle of evergreen fertilizer in spring can only do some good, but isn’t really a necessity.
