If you are new to clematis growing, or want an easy, reliable, yet beautiful variety, then we recommend the Hagley Hybrid Clematis for you. Often called Pink Chiffon™, that name gives you a good idea of the beauty of the flowers of this plant, with its gorgeous soft-pink flowers, which are 4 to 6 inches across. Their 6 broad petals open out flat, showing their lovely pink faces, with slight waving along the edges of the petals. In the center is an especially-striking cluster of long stamens, white with deep purple pollen on their ends. A prolific flowerer, you will have an abundance of blooms from June right through into September – a great garden highlight for the summer and early fall. We recommend this variety to beginners for several reasons. It is tough and easy to grow, and exceptional for doing well in shade – even against a north-facing wall. It only grows to about 6 feet tall, so its perfect for a panel of trellis, up against a fence, in a pot, or growing into a larger plant – perhaps a climbing rose. If you have read complex pruning rules for clematis, don’t worry, this one is easy – just cut it back hard in spring and stand back for the burst of vigorous growth that will follow.
In cool areas the ideal spot for your Hagley Hybrid Clematis is one where it grows up into the sun from a position where the roots are shaded. A spot behind a small shrub is perfect, or place a flat rock over the root zone – that will keep the soil cool and moist. However this variety is unusual in loving shade, and in hotter zones we recommend an area with just a little morning sun, or even on a bright north-facing wall. This also keeps the color stronger, as it tends to fade in very sunny, hot locations. Dig plenty of rich compost into the ground, and if the pH of your soil is less than 6.5, add a small handful of garden lime or crushed eggshells to the soil. Plant a little deeper than it is in the pot, and you are done. Water new plants regularly, and established plants will enjoy a deep soaking if the soil is getting dry. Pruning is simple – just cut back in spring, once you can see buds, cutting just above a pair of healthy buds no more than 12 inches above the ground (this is a Group 3 variety).
