For beauty and function, nothing in the garden beats a yew hedge. Always dense, and giving excellent screening and protection, yew hedges are the gold standard, as seen in the best gardens across America and Europe. They live for ever, even hundreds of years, and can be trimmed to perfection with ease. For a substantial yew hedge you need the right variety, and the Eddie Yew is it. With strong upright stems that grow a foot a year, it rivals more routine choices like Emerald Green Arborvitae, is shade tolerant, and provides a much darker, high-class backdrop to your garden. For the very best hedge you can grow, look no further. Of course, the uses for this beautiful tree don’t stop with hedges. Its slender, upright form is perfect for accents in your beds, for specimens out on a lawn – try a group of three for a great feature – or among more rounded shrubs. It is perfect for the angles between walls or between windows when planting around your home, and great too as a pair on either side of a door. Deep, rich green all year round, the classic look of the Eddie Yew will bring excellence to your garden, however and wherever you grow it.

  • Dense, upright growth to at least 12 feet if needed
  • Rich, dark-green foliage for year-round beauty
  • Fast-growing, at least a foot a year
  • Ideal for areas of partial or full shade
  • Excellent choice for cooler parts of the country

Plant the Eddie Yew in full sun or partial shade for dense growth. It will also grow in light full shade, but will not be as densely bushy. Plant it in moist but well-drained soil, and add plenty of compost when planting. Use more as mulch, and water frequently during the first season, reducing watering over the next couple of seasons. Established plants have good tolerance of normal summer drought. Water deeply in late fall to prevent winter burn. Will grow in acidic or alkaline soils, and in clay soil too. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart for hedges. Fertilize in spring with evergreen food, and trim as needed between late spring and early fall. The more you trim, the denser it becomes. It isn’t eaten by deer and is normally free of serious pest or disease issues.
