Our native redbud tree is well-known for its spectacular flowering display, one of the first trees to bloom. Now you can grow it, not as a medium-sized, spreading tree, but in a compact weeping form, a cascading glory of blooms on long, descending branches. Growing no more than 10 feet tall and wide, it makes a graceful and striking specimen, ideally grown where the branches can cascade indefinitely, such as on a slope, or near the top of a wall. The near-black stems are bare when the beautiful purple-pink blooms emerge, making one of the best flower displays in your garden. The leaves emerge later, pinkish at first and then warm green, their heart-shaped form adding interest and beauty. In fall the leaves turn yellow and sometimes oranges, and in winter the bare black branches have a striking profile. A great tree along the edges of woodland, near other trees, and perfect for smaller gardens and courtyards.
You can grow the Green Machine Redbud in zone 5 in a sheltered spot, and all the way into zone 9. It enjoys company, so plant it near larger trees, and not near hot walls, with some afternoon shade if you are in a hot part of the country. It grows in all soils, both acidic and alkaline, and from sand to clay, as long as it is well-drained. Grows well on poorer soils. Some protection from deer may be necessary, as the branches are low to the ground. Avoid pruning other than removing any dead twigs, and use a strong stake to support the stem until it is very strong and thick. Any upright shoots from the trunk should be removed promptly.
