Hinoki Cypress is one of the very best garden conifers you can grow. It has an elegance and grace not found in other conifers like junipers or fir. The charming fans of foliage spread out in layers, giving a most beautiful look. This variety has leaves that are strongly golden-yellow, only showing more green deeper inside the bush, which serves to accent and highlight the gold even more. While many dwarf Hinoki cypress are rather fat, forming broad pyramids, this one is slender, like it just came back from the gym, with a narrow form that is perfect for slipping into spaces in the garden, or for making a vertical accent that doesn’t take up much room. Packed with personality, you will soon come to love its special ‘presence’, and look upon it as an essential member of your garden family – happy to greet you every time you see it. It will be about 3 feet tall and just a foot wide within less than 10 years, and will mature perhaps 5 feet tall. Yellow all year round, it is especially valuable in winter, when its strong color lightens up the winter garden and the gloomy days.
In full sun is best for the Golden Pillar Hinoki Cypress, as that will keep it bright and colorful all year round. In warmer zones it benefits from a little afternoon shade, but not too much, or it will become more greenish. It is happy in just about any garden soil that is well-drained, but unlike some other conifers it needs regular moisture, and isn’t notably tolerant of dryness at all. Use mulch over the roots to keep it damp enough, and water as needed. It is very easy to grow and almost always trouble-free. We don’t recommend trimming, which can easily destroy the beautiful shell-like or fan-like arrangement of the foliage.
