The Fukushu Kumquat Tree is a unique and special variety of kumquat, developed in Japan, which has much larger fruits than normal – they are between 2 and 3 inches across, and round, rather than elongated, as others usually are. The skin is yellow, turning deep orange as they ripen on the tree, and the abundant crop is very attractive among the broad, glossy leaves. As an ornamental, this tree has so much going for it. It is small and compact, making it ideal for pots and container-growing. It has especially attractive leaves, and is thornless. It is also cold tolerant, and will happily grow where no other citrus ventures. Its beautiful, fragrant, white blossoms appear right through spring and summer. Ripe from November or December through to March, the fruits are sweet enough to eat fresh, easily peeled, or eaten whole, and also have an interesting tartness and bold flavor. They are great for jams, preserves, baking and salads, or just as ornamental fruit. Grows outdoors from zone 8, and in a cold porch anywhere, perhaps with some supplementary heating during the coldest months.

Grow the Fukushu Kumquat Tree in full sun, or with as much as possible. It is cold hardy to 15o F, and will grow outdoors in zone 8. Perfect for a pot, in a cold, bright porch or indoors for winter and outdoors from spring to fall. Pot-grown trees should be grown in a well-drained compost, and fertilized regularly from spring to early winter. Time outdoors is the best pest control, allowing natural predators to clean your tree. Self-pollinating when outdoors – if trees flower indoors use a soft artist’s brush to transfer pollen between the flowers. Prune as needed to control the shape and size, but this compact tree rarely needs it.
