Fignominal Fig

If you love fresh, tree-ripened figs, but lack the space for a full-sized tree, then choose the dwarf Fignomenal Fig Tree – the perfect solution to a common problem. This dwarf form of the Chicago Hardy Fig ticks all the boxes for hardiness, abundant fruiting, delicious, jammy flavor, and easy-care, but is a smaller tree, growing barely more than 6 feet tall and 4 feet wide. This makes it ideal if you have limited garden space, or want a compact tree to grow in a pot. Pruning figs and keeping them also fruiting is tricky, but with this great variety no pruning is needed – in fact it will be more dwarf if you don’t try to prune. It is hardy outdoors in a pot from zone 7, and hardy in the ground, in a sheltered spot, in zone 5. The fruits are medium-sized, round, with a brown-purple skin. Cut one open and admire the pink flesh inside, before sinking your teeth into one of nature’s wonders – a fresh, tree-ripened fig from your own garden. Leave fruit to hang until the neck softens for the maximum sweetness and pleasure.

Grow the Fignomenal Fig Tree in full sun. In colder zones it is best spread out on a south-facing wall for maximum protection and ripening. Plant in a well-drained soil – poor soils are preferred and give the biggest crops, so don’t add compost when planting, just use a little as mulch. Grow potted trees in a mix of half regular potting soil and half cactus mix. Hardy outdoors to zone 5 in the ground, or zone 7 in a pot. Very drought tolerant once established, and usually entirely free of pest or disease problems. Netting may be needed to protect the ripening fruit from birds. Pruning isn’t needed, or recommended, as it may stimulate the growth of vigorous, tall shoots that don’t fruit. Remove any winter-damaged wood back to the first healthy bud or branch.
