Fairy Puff Sawara Cypress

But seriously, the Fairy Puff Sawara Cypress really is an impressive plant, especially if miniatures are what you love. If you like ‘cute’ and ‘adorable’, then we suggest you explore the world or miniature conifers, and start with the cutest – this one. Forming a rounded ball of tiny stems and leaves, it is a lovely gray-green color, with the tips a beautiful pale, pale green that is almost white. It grows with many tiny, rather irregular shoots, making a puff-like loose bun that will be between 1 and 2 feet across in 10 years, depending on how often you trim it. Left to grow untrimmed it will probably be 3 feet or so tall and wide in time. Easy to grow, it is a lovely choice for a small rock-garden, or to create a bed of miniatures in a small spot in your garden – perhaps along a level of a retaining wall. Many lovers of these plants grow them in pots, where you can get really up-close and personal, and creating a miniature garden in a window box is also great, and wonderful to do with your children.

The perfect spot for your Fairy Puff Sawara Cypress would be in full sun, althouhg in zone 8 some afternoon shade might be best, to avoid foliage scorching. Avoid heavy shade. Ordinary, well-drained, garden soil is fine, with no special requirements needed. For pots use a soil blended for trees, not houseplants. Pest or disease problems are very rare, and this plant is not at all difficult to grow. It is very unlikely to have any pest or disease problems and is generally easy to grow, even for a beginner. To maintain a tight, bun-like shape, and lots of white shoots, trim at least once a year, as soon as the new growth has matured a little. A new, tighter, set of foliage will develop.
