The world of iris is a large one, and stretches beyond the bearded iris, those lovers of hot, dry conditions. When it comes to damp soils and water, Japanese iris stand out, and Eden’s Purple Glory Japanese Iris is a spectacular form that is easy to grow and makes a terrific addition to your perennials, anywhere in your garden. The slender, green foliage is almost grass-like, and stands strongly vertical for most of the season, growing to at least 2 feet tall. The flower stems rise to around 3 feet, carrying several very large blooms, spread out in a beautiful triangle, each bloom a brilliant, velvet-purple, accented by a bright yellow throat. It makes a striking addition to your perennial beds, and of course looks great in a Japanese-themed garden. It’s just as lovely, though, everywhere from formal beds to natural gardening, and looks especially lovely planted in shallow water at the edge of a pond or stream. Easy to grow and spectacularly beautiful, this is a great plant that should be in every garden – including yours.
Plant Eden’s Purple Glory Japanese Iris in full sun for good blooming. Grow it in any rich, moist soil, from regular garden soil to standing in a few inches of water. Winter hardy in zone 4 and thrives in hot, humid zones too. It isn’t eaten by deer or rabbits, and is free of the pests and diseases that trouble bearded iris. Easy to grow in a natural setting, or cut down flower stems when they finish, and foliage in late fall – watch out for the small green tips, and be careful not to cut them too.
