We don’t all have space for a big old-fashioned lilac tree, but we probably have space for the beautiful Korean Lilac. The flower heads may be smaller, but they make up for it in abundance, fragrance and their beautiful lilac-purple coloring. For color in May you can’t beat it, and this easy-care, disease-resistant shrub looks even better now we have raised it up on a 2-foot trunk, so it makes a fabulous rounded bush that you can plant underneath for later color. It will soon be over 5 feet tall, with an oval shape, and will look great in the angle of your house walls, or flanking your front door. It would also be beautiful centering a bed of annual flowers, bringing early color, and the golden-yellow fall leaves are charming too. With its trunk it is also great in a planter box, leaving room below for trailing plants or our beautiful Drift® Roses. Densely twiggy and packed with bloom, it’s a long way from those big, awkward lilac bushes of grandma, and much more suited to modern gardens, especially urban ones, where it really thrives.
- Dense, rounded bush on a 2-foot trunk
- Fragrant lilac-purple flower heads in May
- Compact size with space beneath for flowers
- Excellent cold-hardiness and thrives in urban conditions
- Great choice for boxes and planters
Plant your Korean Lilac Tree in full sun, or with a few hours of shade each day. It grows best in rich, moist, well-drained soil, but once established it has good resistance to drought. Very cold-hardy, growing well even in zone 3. It is deer resistant and also very resistant to powdery mildew, which commonly disfigures larger lilac trees. Trim lightly after flowering to remove seed pods and shape as desired. Don’t trim after mid-summer, or flowering will be reduced. If any stems grow from the ground, or from the trunk, remove them, as these are the root-stock used to make the tree, and are not the Korean lilac.
