Doublicious Daylily

Most daylilies have open, star-like flowers, but for something truly different, grow the amazing Doublelicious Daylily – it makes a tasty change. The large flowers are 6 inches across, with broad, flat back petals surrounding a frilly center, very different from most other varieties. The blooms are a rich, citrus-orange, highlighted by darker orange veins, and the whole is a fabulous, and yes, delicious, addition to your garden you will love. These double blooms make a great statement in your garden, visible from yards away, and they come just when most other things aren’t blooming, in July and August. The stems stand 2 feet tall, above the long, narrow leaves, and each stem has up to 20 blooms on it, so that’s 3 weeks of flowering right there, with stems starting at different times giving you around 6 weeks in all. Right through July and into August you are sure of brightness. Plant it among other perennials, or with shrubs in a bed, rock garden, or slope. Very easy to grow, and very special.

The Doublelicious Daylily will grow best in full sun, but it will take a touch of shade too, but not much. Plant it in any well-drained soil, from sand to clay, although rich, moist loam soils are best. It is very adaptable, growing almost anywhere, and taking cold to zone 3, the heat and humidity of the south-east, and drought too. Water during summer if you can, but established plants are remarkably drought tolerant, although flowering may suffer a little. Deer and rabbits don’t eat it, and pests or diseases are very rare. This variety goes dormant over the winter, so remove all the dead leaves in fall – a mulch with rich compost will help at that time too. Take off dead flowers to prevent seed pods forming, and cut down the whole flower stem once the last bud has finished, just for neatness in your garden.
